Microbes are sometimes seen as the simplest forms of life, they are however, one of the cleverest and most versatile products of evolution, capable of surviving in the most hostile environments. They represent a vast and diverse resource, the abundant potential which we are just beginning to understand.

A healthy gut microbiome is essential for healthy livestock. Beneficial microorganisms aid the animal in digestion, modulate the immune system and protect the animal from infection. When the microbiome becomes unbalanced or lacks sufficient levels of beneficial microbes it can impair gut health and prevent the animal from reaching its full genetic potential. This key message is highlighted throughout the articles featured in this special section, which explores the fascinating world of microbes.
According to the World Health Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), AMR is one of the most pressing global health threats today. Addressing this challenge requires close collaboration across the human, plant, environment and animal sectors. While antibiotics are commonly used in livestock for disease prevention and treatment, several alternatives, such as probiotics, prebiotics, phytogenics and improved animal management practices, can help reduce dependence on antibiotics while promoting optimal animal health.
This special section will touch upon the above-mentioned, additionally you will find articles that will discuss other topics such as, using microencapsulation technology and how it can offer the targeted delivery of novel additives and, how using a Bacillus consortium can enhance the survival of larval shrimp.
