French feed mill employees go free in BSE case
Two French judges have closed the French BSE case, which was dragged on over the last 17 years, Dutch newspaper Boerderij Vandaag reports.
None of the suspected persons will be convicted, according to the judges who were involved in the case that started in 1997.
Four people, working at a French feed mill were suspected of illegally importing animal meal from the UK.
It was in 1986 that “mad cow disease” or BSE was first identified in cattle. This led to the Feed Ban in the US and the TSE regulation in Europe. These bans prohibited the feeding of most mammalian-derived proteins (animal meal) to cattle. Feeding of infected ruminant material back to ruminants is believed to be the most likely means of transmission of the disease.
