The application of plants in poultry diets are multiple. Firstly, a number of plants are known to contain high levels of metabolically active vitamin D3 and studies have shown that under adverse conditions, these can be useful in reducing the egg shell quality problems associated with age.
Furthermore, plant extracts can be very useful in reducing and preventing poultry diseases.
Coccidiosis (Eimeria acervulina) is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract caused by microscopic organisms called coccidia. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected feces. It is most severe in young or weak animals and often causes bloody diarrhea.
A three-year PhD study at the University of Leeds and continuing research have shown the potential for the combination of thymol and carvacrol as a feed microadditive to limit the production impact of Eimeria challenge.
