US company Bunge, which was closing its Dobrich-based vegetable oil refinery Kaliakra AD, will continue to do business in Bulgaria and will even expand its local operations, local media reported.
Bunge used to buy mainly sunflower seed from Bulgarian producers but this
year it will start purchasing wheat, maize and rapeseed, according to Bunge
Bulgaria executive director Tzvetan Iliev.
Inefficient
Bunge’s
cooking oil production is shifted from Bulgaria to Hungary or the Ukraine due to
the inefficiency of the Dobrich plant. Restructuring the Bulgarian plant would
have been difficult and it would have been unwise form a business point of view
to keep it operational, said Iliev.
The equipment of the Dobrich factory
will be mothballed and could be partially reused in the production of
biofuels.
