Chinese ‘food scare factories’ closed
China has closed three companies connected to tainted batches of cough medicine in Panama and pet food in the US, the Financial Times reported.
The government said it has revoked the business license of Taixing Glycerin
Factory, which has been accused of selling a chemical that was used in cough
medicine in Panama, causing over 90 deaths. The product contained diethylene
glycol, which is used as a thickening agent in antifreeze, but was labeled ‘TD
Glycerin’ which could be confused with the sweetener glycerin.
Xuzhou
Anying and Bin-zhou Futian were also shut down for illegally adding melamine, a
chemical used to make plastics, to wheat gluten products that were used in pet
food in the US.
