Dogs do better with beta-glucans and selenium

The use of beta-glucans in a dogs diet helped it recover more quickly after spaying. Also organic selenium supplementation showed positive health effects in pets.

These research findings from Biorigin were presented at the European Society of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition conference, held in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on September 11-13.

In the first  study, female dogs were supplemented with beta glucans* before spaying. After the operation, the supplemented dogs showed a better immune response, higher blood leukocyte counts, and reduced inflammatory response, as shown by the lowers levels of C-reactive protein.

The supplement, containing purified beta 1,3 / 1,6 glucans extracted from the cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisae, are known to have a positive effect on the immune status and health. The results of this present study, together with other studies with pets, add evidence to the scientific dossier of the product and confirm its immunomodulating effects.

Biorigin also presented the results of a trial in which dogs were supplemented with an organic selenium source**. It was shown that this type of selenium reduced oxidative stress, and therefore, improved the health of dogs submitted to adverse situations compared with an inorganic selenium source.
