20-12-2007 | |

Farmers in France have earned 12% more in 2007 thanks to rising agricultural prices on the world market, including cereals, according to forecasts published by the French Ministry of Agriculture.

According to the Ministry, the average agricultural income per farmer has
increased by 12% (excluding inflation) in 2007, following a gain of 16.1% in
2006 and a decrease of 9.7% in 2005, thanks mainly the rise in agricultural
prices.

Crop farmers benefited most from increased market prices. Income
for grain and oilseed farmers almost doubled (+98%) in 2007.

However,
because the increased costs for animal feed, beef producers have lost 23% of
their income, while sheep farmers saw their income drop by 28% and reach the
lowest level since 1990. Dairy farmers faced a 4% decrease in
income.
