Irish feed industry hit by ethanol boom

11-05-2007 | |

The booming ethanol industry in the United States negatively affect the raw material supply for the 850m a year Irish animal feed market.

Ireland imports over one million tons of soy meal and
160,000 tons of corn which is used as the raw material in the production of
animal feed in Ireland. As a result of the biofuel industry, less corn is now
available for export, causing a shortage of supply and doubling the price of
corn in the last year. In addition, the rising energy costs and weather
affecting the harvest and has brought about a growth of between 15% and 20% in
the price of Irish animal feed.

For raw materials Ireland is very
dependent on the US. According to Deirdre Webb director of the Irish Grain and
Feed Association, governements have not been thinking enough about the impact
the biofuel industry will have on our food market.
