UK farmers to profit from wheat DDGS
Vivergo, a new biofuel plant in East Yorkshire, UK, is due to open late this summer. It will use 1.1 million tonnes of wheat per year to produce bioethanol and half a million tonnes of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS).
This will provide a domestic supply of protein, which has full traceability, is non-GM and should lower feed costs.
Neil Woolf of AB-Agri said DDGS will be available in a 32% crude protein pellet, which will need to be blended. It is suitable for mixing with sugar beet, straights or home-grown feed.
Protein replacement
Wheat DDGS is rich in oil and yeast, and it will be a good source of digestible fibre and should improve rumen function.
It can replace imported soybean meal, rapeseed meal, peas and beans in diets and is likely to be used in compound feeds.
A 50:50 mix of DDGS and sugar beet would give a 20-22% protein feed suiting for feeding ewes and lambs and finishing lambs, although the ratio would need to be adjusted for different stages of pregnancy, it was said.
