Zoo keepers feed garlic to penguins

05-07-2007 | |

Up to four cloves of garlic are being hidden in fish fed to each of the 50 penguins at the Shanghai Zoo to ease respiratory ailments in humid weather.

The garlic is aimed at boosting the penguins respiratory systems which have
suffered because of a reactions to moulds which increase in the hot and humid
summer months.

The zoo keeper was reported to have said the garlic had
to be well hidden because the penguins were fussy about their food.

Garlic has long been used as a medicine in China and is reputed to help
with a wide range of illnesses including colds and flu, high cholesterol and
allergies in humans.
