Alltech recently announced that the company’s solid-state fermentation (SSF) plant in Serdan, Mexico will triple in size to accommodate an increase in enzyme production.
The rising costs of raw materials is becoming an area of increasing concern
for livestock farmers as there is growing concern about the amount of corn being
diverted from the agri-business for use in ethanol production. “The animal feed
industry therefore needs to develop alternative raw materials,” said Mark Lyons,
Alltech’s director of international projects.
To be able to use make use
of alternative raw materials such as cellulose, new technologies (such as SSF)
are needed. Alltech’s expansion will include the addition of two fermentation
chambers that measure five times the size of the existing chambers while
fiber-handling and enzyme recovery systems will also be
installed.
