Australian professor supports GM canola

Professor Jim Pratley of the Charles Stuart University is strongly supporting genetically modified (GM) canola after a five-year trial which he says shows the potential yield and profit advantages.

Pratley says it is the first long-term study of its type and he is now
calling for a lifting of the moratorium on GM canola in Australia. But Pratley
is facing tough opposition. Australia’s major food processing company, Goodman
Fielder, has urged authorities to extend the GM ban beyond next
year.

Pratley in his study found that Roundup Ready canola consistently
delivered superior weed control, higher yields and oil quality and better
profits when compared to current common canola varieties grown under
conventional weed management systems.
