CaroTech® dedicates research to environment

12-08-2009 | |

Carotenoid Technologies (CaroTech®) of the IQF Group in Tarragona, Spain has continued its strategic technical focus on identifying active ingredients for their unique encapsulated products which help reduce environmental impact.

A six-year Ph.D. thesis sponsored by the company on “Plant extracts as rumen modifiers” has identified garlic oil as one of these potentially environmentally-friendly ingredients.  As part of a European consortium studying environmentally-friendly solutions, the findings will be presented at the XIth International Symposium on Ruminant Physiology in Clermont-Ferrand, France from September 6-9, 2009.

The communication on “Effects of garlic oil on in vitro rumen fermentation and methane production are influenced by the basal diet” between CaroTech®, the School of Biology at the University of Leeds (United Kingdom) School of Biology and the Department of Animal Production at the University of Leon (Spain) presents novel results showing that the response on methane reduction by garlic depends largely on the type of diet fed the animal.
