Designer eggs lead to feed mill expansion

28-12-2007 | |

Suguna Poultry in India, funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), is expanding its operations by putting up a huge layer farm in Namakkal in Tamil Nadu and a feed mill in Bangalore.

The proposed feed mill involving an investment of Rs300 million (€ 5.3
million) will be Asia’s largest with a per hour capacity of 60
tonnes.

Suguna Poultry Farm Limited is based in Coimbatore and is quite
successful with selling designer eggs. Designer eggs are the outcome of feeding
the hens with customised food to get eggs with desired
properties.

Recently it has introduced two more variants to its basket of
designer and diet eggs, taking the total to four egg brands: Suguna Active( with
high levels of docosahexaenoic (DHA), Vitamin E and organic selenium) and Suguna
Heart (enriched with Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin E) and its two earlier
brands Suguna Pro and Suguna Sakthi.

Branded eggs cost more because the
special feed for the layer birds, cost 35% more than the normal chicken
feed.

The designer eggs business needs deep pockets to survive. Many have
entered but also exited the business.
