The proposal to end the buying of maize into intervention was blocked last
Thursday, 30 November; however, it is expected to be agreed by the
Commission College next week. The national farm ministers will have to sign the
proposal off before it becomes law.
This move began when the Commission agreed to tighten the rules for buying
maize into intervention in September. This was a bid to tackle the huge
expansion of the stocks since the enlargement of the EU in 2004.
Commission figures show there are 5.1 tonnes of maize in intervention
stores at present.
