Agriculture experts are meeting today in Bendigo, in central Victoria, Australia, to discuss ways to help grain producers recover from the drought.
The Grains Research and Development Corporation says
grain production in Victoria has fallen by 76% over the past year.
The conference aims to advise
farmers on new technologies, more drought-tolerant grain types and better
management practices.
The corporation’s David Shannon says farmers face an
uncertain future and need to adapt quickly to extreme conditions.
“Most of
them say, ‘yes, well, last year was a rotten year but, hey, look, we’ve got the
opportunity to really capture something here after that’ and that’s what today
is all about trying to give them some clues on how to make those crucial
decisions to capturing the recovery,” he said.
