SPACE exceeds 110,000 visitors

The French livestock show SPACE, held last week in Rennes, attracted over 110,000 visitors.

Exactly 111,426 people passed the entrance gates at the Rennes Airport
Fairgrounds between September 11-14. It was the eleventh consecutive year that
the French show attracted over 100,000 people.

The show organisers
counted 9,132 international visitors – 8.2% of the total number of visitors.
They could pay a visit to 1,283 exposers, of which 371 were from abroad. Last
year, SPACE welcomed 107,147 visitors, of which 9,000 came from overseas.

Sarkozy
The show was opened by the recently elected French
president Nicolas Sarkozy, announcing he will propose a new political framework
for the European common agricultural policy once France will be presiding the
European Union next year. He emphasised the importance for the EU not to wait
until 2013 but to impose changes prior to that.

He repeated his promise
to reject any WTO treaty that goes against French interests.

Live
animals
The SPACE is one of the few international shows where live
animals are present. Each year, the show offers its visitors a national dairy
breeds event, a beef breeds event, and a sheep event. This year, over 600 cattle
of 12 different breeds were showed at SPACE. Competitions, bloodline
presentations and auctions succeeded one another in the main arena. The SPACE
also hosted the national events for Normand and Limousin cattle and Vendéen
sheep.
