US keen to encourage growing of GM wheat

03-08-2011 | |

The United States has confirmed its commitment to genetically modified crops, as a means of feeding a growing world population.

Director of global policy analysis with the United States Department of Agriculture, Mike Dwyer, says GMOs are needed to dramatically increase yields on land already used to produce food.

He says GM corn and soy crops have proven themselves in the US, but wheat is trailing behind. "You know, right now, there’s no one producing GMO wheat," he said.

"I think there’s a lot of producers that want to try it, but no one wants to go first. Clearly it would be on my shortlist of products to go GM."
