Aussie grain farmers welcome the rain

08-05-2007 | |

Farmers in north central Victoria, Australia are busy sowing grain crops, after good rainfall of between 30 and 50 millimetres. Drought dominated the country over the last few weeks.

Elmore district farmer David Johnson expects most of the cropping to be
finished by the end of May. He hopes there will be more rain this week followed
by warm weather to get the crops growing.

“That’s the beauty of rain
early enough in the season that the conditions are warm and everything wants to
grow, if it rains in July or June and it is freezing cold then growth is a lot
slower, no the conditions are ideal,” he said.
