Cargill, an international provider of food, agricultural and risk management products and services, has donated $500,000 to second Harvest Heartland for hunger relief in western Wisconsin and Minnesota, USA.
As the economy continues its downward slide, Second Harvest Heartland faces a 125 million-meal shortfall to feed hungry families in its 59-county service area in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, a Second Harvest official said. Second Harvest Heartland said that for each dollar donated, it can distribute more than $9 worth of grocery products for those in need.
“We are humbled by the generosity that Cargill has shown through this unprecedented donation to Second Harvest Heartland,” said Rob Zeaske, executive director of Second Harvest Heartland. At a time when the need for hunger relief has never been greater, Cargill’s gift is a true blessing.”
Zeaske added that while the Cargill donation helps narrow that gap by providing about two million meals, the need for additional ongoing assistance still exists.
“We hope that Cargill’s generosity inspires other corporations to dig deep into their hearts and their pockets to help Second Harvest Heartland end hunger right here in our backyards once and for all,” Zeaske said.
In 2008, Minnetonka, Minn.-based Cargill supported community efforts in more than 50 countries with a record $44 million in contributions and $19 million in future commitments. Cargill has operations in Milwaukee, employing more than 1,800 people in the area.
