Dioxin oil to be analysed in lab
The oil thought to have caused the pig feed contamination with dioxin that led to the withdrawal of all Irish pork two weeks ago has been sent to a laboratory in Germany for analysis.
Officials at the Environmental Protection Agency say the results, which are
expected after Christmas, will be crucial in deciding if anyone will be
prosecuted over the use of “inappropriate oil” at Millstream Recycling in Co
Carlow. The companies involved in the supply chain have all denied
responsibility for the oil, which contaminated the pig feed to 5,000 times more
than the legal threshold for cancer-causing dioxins.
Compensation for
pig processors
The Department of Agriculture has said pig processors will
get €50m of the €180m government compensation package before the end of the
year.
The package relates to primary and secondary processors,” it said.
“We cannot say exactly at this stage the firms that will benefit. Verifications
and payments have yet to be completed.”
