On February 26, the European Commission (EC) has withdrawn the zero-tolerance for animal protein in plant based animal feed (fodder).
The only exception used to be for sugar beets. However, because the prevalence of BSE is constantly reducing, the EC is relaxing the measure that no single trace of animal protein is allowed in all fodder types and raw materials.
The last years, animal feed companies could face serious charges when traces of animal bone from the soil were transmitted to hay, grain or other raw materials. The improvement of analytical methods also resulted in that these traces were easily and quicker found than before.
These small traces of animal protein are now allowed to be present in fodder.
