The Directorate of Risk Assessment & Scientific Assistance (RASA) brings together EFSA’s risk assessment capacity on general public health issues (biological hazards, contaminants, plant and animal health and welfare) building on the ‘One Health’ concept and its scientific support activities.
The directorate’s reorganisation on 1 January 2014 has streamlined its working practices and created new efficiencies through the pooling and sharing of tools and resources. These reforms are also intended to help implement a project-based approach at EFSA and to empower staff, further developing their skills and expertise.
Commenting on the changes, Acting Director of RASA Dr. Marta Hugas said, “the directorate is now in a strong position to champion a trans-disciplinary approach in providing scientific advice across three work streams – raw data, published information and methodologies for appraising evidence such as expert opinion. This will help to ensure that EFSA’s scientific advice continues to help to protect Europe’s 500 million consumers.”
