F.D.A. opens food safety office in China

20-11-2008 | |

The United States opened a branch of the Food and Drug Administration in the Chinese capital on Wednesday, aimed to regulate the safety of imported food and medicine.

The opening follows a string of scandals involving
contaminated Chinese-made toothpaste, pet food, drugs and milk. The F.D.A. plans
to open inspection stations in Shanghai and Guangzhou; offices will also be
opened in India and Latin America.

The F.D.A. offices in China will
include eight officials described as “inspectors and senior technical experts in
foods, medicines and medical devices.”
