French feed production down in February

With 1.6 million tonnes in February French production of compound feed fell by 12.8% compared to February 2008, according to figures released Friday by the organizations of the cooperative (Coop de France animal nutrition) and private industry (Snia).

Production of cattle feed declined the most with 16.8%, the two organisations observed. Pig feed was down 13.4% and poultry feed production decreased 9.2%, with a more pronounced decline for turkey feed (-11.2%) and feeds for waterfowl (-15.5%).

On the first two months of the year the decline in economic activity was 10.8% compared to the same period of 2008.

Snia and Coop de France indicate that "the production of organic feed on the 2007-2008 marketing year is estimated at 128,000 tonnes, growing steadily for the third consecutive season.”

A further increase of 3.6% of this tonnage produced is expected in 2008-2009.

Food for pigs registered the most significant rise (+6.6%), followed by feed for chickens (5.2%).

The market for organic livestock feed "is heavily dominated by feed for laying hens, which represent nearly half of the tonnage produced (46%). All species of birds represent 77% of total tonnage.

The three main raw materials used are maize (33%), wheat (13%) and soybean (10%).
