Fresh and organic are popular in pet food

08-07-2008 | |

The fresh pet food market is poised to grow to $473 million by 2012. The market saw $169 million in reported sales in 2007, according to a new report from Packaged Facts.

“Since the late 1990s, virtually all of the dollar sales growth in the North
American pet food market has been coming from the conversion of pet owners to
higher-priced fare, and the single most important factor behind their
willingness to pay more is the belief that better quality products offer
tangible health benefits”, the authors say in the
report.

Organic is hot
The report notes that
natural and organic products are one of the hottest trends in the overall
marketplace—and that such products are closely associated with fresh pet food.
Innovative new products with convenience features and technological advances,
spurred by heightened food safety concerns, are driving consumer
demand.

“The key to this market and its growth rate will depend largely
on the ability of marketers and pet specialty retailers of fresh pet foods to
educate consumers about the benefits of these products,” says Tatjana Meerman,
publisher, Packaged Facts. “Other factors will include marketers’ abilities to
expand distribution and increase production at a time when fuel and raw
ingredient prices are at record highs and still
increasing.”
