Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan in India has said that the country will have to face a serious shortage of foodgrains unless immediate steps are taken to enhance agricultural production.
The country’s current foodgrains shortage, he said, was
around 5.5 million tonnes. However, it should ensure that the production of rice
was stepped up by 10 million tonnes, that of wheat by 8 million tonnes and
pulses by two million tonnes to overcome a possible major shortage in the
future.
