Mill in Philippines closes after it bought GM corn

23-04-2009 | |

A company shut its feed mill in Negros Occidental, the Philippines following the seizure of at least two shipments of genetically modified corn by the provincial government.

Dante Samonte, head of Bounty Fresh Agro Venture’s feed milling operations for Visayas and Mindanao, said Tuesday that the company made the decision because it could not get enough supply of corn that was not genetically modified to sustain the milling operations of its Negros Occidental facility. Samonte explained that it was difficult to get enough natural corn.

With the feed mill’s shutdown, Bounty Agro, one of the largest poultry integrators in the country, had to get its feeds from its Iloilo plant, he said. The move will drive up the company’s production cost, Samonte said.
