The new issue of All About Feed magazine (issue 9) focuses on calf nutrition and mycotoxins. We also delve into the importance of claw health for sows and how nutrition can help.
Over 84% of the sows suffer from one or more claw lesions, while 10-15% of the western European sows suffer from lameness2. Group housing of sows can have a negative influence on claw health. When claw problems can be prevented or cured, fertility and performance of sows can improve and culling rates can be reduced. The use of the new generation high bioavailable zinc, copper and selenium sources can be a suitable tool to improve claw health. Author Irene Eising explains the results from these trials in this article.
The mycotoxin focus in this issue focuses on poultry. A study was conducted by the Samitec Institute of Analytical Microbiological and technological solutions (Brazil) in May 2016 in order to measure the effect of three mycotoxins (fumonisin, T-2/HT-2 toxins and aflatoxin) on broilers health and performance and to evaluate the efficacy of a mycotoxin binder* to mitigate the effects of these mycotoxins. It was shown that the mycotoxin binder tested improved the birds’ feed consumption and thus the final body weight.
All About Feed editor Emmy Koeleman visited the ruminant event from Trouw Nutrition, held in the Netherlands. Trouw Nutrition (part of Nutreco) has been conducting dedicated research in dairy cattle for many years and developed a concept for optimum dairy heifer management (LifeStart). Insights about this concept and the associated research done at their calf and beef research centre in the Netherlands (opened in 2016) were discussed at a recent symposium themed – Breaking down barriers: dairy heifer development beyond weaning growth. The review of this event can be read in the latest issue of All About Feed.
