A new report by the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research (Bioforsk) challenges the received view that organic farming is better for the environment than conventional agriculture.
The report points out that eco farming has a higher potential for greenhouse gas emission. In addition, the reliance on natural fertiliser in organic farming may lead to more nitrate being released than mineral fertiliser.
The report also points out that manure is often used as a fertiliser in organic farming systems, and this releases significant quantities of methane and nitrous oxide.
