Price of eggs set to rocket

17-09-2007 | |

Egg prices will soar because of the rising cost of layer feeds, producers in the UK warned.

Six medium free-range eggs will rise from an average £1.09 to £1.29 ($2.17 to
$2.57 or €1.57 to €1.86) over the next few weeks.

Animal feed, which are
more than 60% or total cost for keeping layer hens, has been hit by wheat
prices, which have doubled in the past year. Wheat is a major ingredient in
European layer feeds. Experts warn the situation could cause an egg shortage as
hard-hit producers switch to other types of farming.

Also demand for
eggs normally increases in the run-up to Christmas and fulfilling demand will
become an issue.
