Important areas in Paraguay are being closed for soy production. The area is subjected to too much damage from the intensive soy production, according to the Government.
The plan is part of the agricultural reconstructions that have been announced
earlier by President Fernando Lugo. The government will create zones where only
small farmers can grow crops – but not soy, said Agricultural Minister Candido
Vera Bejarano in an interview with press agency Bloomberg.
Paraguay’s
production of oilseeds has been doubled since 2000. Last year, 6.8 million tonnes was harvested, according to the Paraguayan
Chamber of Grain and Oilseed Exporters (Capeco). The expansion was partly realised by
the increased prices for the oilseeds.
Vera Bejerano: “If we don’t stop
the expansion, rural communities will disappear”. This is not what we want.” According
to Vera Bejarano, the high soy prices make small farmers move from the
rural area to the cities, after being bought out by large soy
firms.
