Tessenderlo pulls out of glycine market

Europe’s only glycine producer has blamed competition from China as it announces plans to leave the market. Chemicals company Tessenderlo Group said it would withdraw from the glycine market by the end of 2010.

The group cited structural problems on the European market and competition from China as the reasons for the decision.
 
An estimated 40 jobs will be lost as production operations in Belgium are wound down throughout 2010. However, no forced redundancies are being planned.
 
Glycine is an amino acid used in a variety of different applications including pet food and pharmaceuticals.
