UK: more money spend on pet food

UK pet owners are increasingly willing to spend extra on food for their cats and dogs, data compiled by M&S Pet Insurance shows.

According to a Mintel Report study cited by the pet insurance deals provider, a total of £1.7bn was spent last year on food for domestic animals. M&S Pet Insurance also highlighted figures from online retailer and pharmacy Bestpet, tracking a 30% rise in premium food sales over the past 12 months.

Charles Sweeney at Bestpet Pharmacy said: "Responsible pet owners who ensure their cats and dogs have a healthy diet and regular exercise can help reduce expensive vet bills in the future."

A survey conducted in 2008 by the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association also showed that nine in 10 pet owners are aware of the potential health effects of various kinds of pet food.
