Value added foods which can fight cancer and boost immune systems have been hailed as the future of the Irish dairy industry.
Enterprise Ireland, which is currently leading a trade mission to Japan, is
promoting the development of functional foods by Irish companies. Its dairy and
functional foods manager Eddie Hughes said there was huge demand for such
enhanced foods from health-conscious consumers.
Japanese companies are
world leaders in the functional foods (such as Yakult) with products claiming to improve
intestinal health, lifestyle-related diseases and other conditions.
The
Irish Government has invested €20m in a functional foods research centre,
which involves 30 scientists from dairy companies, Teagasc and third level
institutions University College Cork, University College Dublin and University
of Limerick. The scientists are spread across different locations but
collaborate online.
